ACIG Experts Participate in UN Global Compact+15 Event
New York hosted the UN Global Compact: +15 Business as a Force for Good forum on 23 to 25 June. To celebrate the 15th anniversary of UN Global Compact, over 500 participants, among other, representatives of local its Networks, academic communities, senior management of companies, investors, gathered together in the UN Headquarters to share their experience, to summarize the 15-year-long activities of the Compact and to demonstrate how businesses––by using partnerships––participate in promotion of social priorities. The results of the forum will be later translated into the concept of the Sustainable Development Goals which will replace the Millennium Development Goals after 2015.
ACIG is a member of the UN Global Compact Network Russia and supports its goals. Deputy Chairman of the Board at ACIG Aleksandr Plakida and Advisor to Deputy Chairman of the Board at ACIG Vladimir Dergousov participated in this event in the capacity of the member of the Steering Committee.
ACIG signed the Statement of Support by business leaders and Global Compact Local Networks to achieve peace at the business platform, entitled Business for Peace, on 23 June. Mr. Plakida signed the Statement on the part of ACIG; Sir Mark Moody-Stuart, Chairman for the Foundation for the UN Global Compact, moderated the signing procedure.
The event participants contemplated on the role of businesses in tackling the most urgent problems of the present-day world on 25 June in the UN General Assembly Hall. They emphasized that the Global Compact activities are at the core of the United Nations operations. Secretary-General United Nations H.E. Ban Ki-moon, Chairman Global Compact Network Turkey Yilmaz Arguden, Chief Executive Officer Nestle SA Paul Bulcke, Chairman Global Compact Network China Fu Chengyu, President of Chamber of Commerce of Bogota Monica De Greiff, Chief Executive Officer Cornerstone Capital Group Erica Karp, Executive Director Un Global Compact George Kell, President UN General Assembly H.E. Mr. Sam K. Kutesa, Group President and Chief Executive Officer DNV GL Henrik O. Madsen, Chief Executive Officer Unilever Paul Polman, General Secretary IndustriALL Global Union Jyrki Raina were among the key speakers of the forum.
The forum was concluded with a celebratory banquet in the presence of UN Secretary-General United Nations H.E. Ban Ki-moon and former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan. All its participants discussed the philosophy of the Global Compact aimed at shared responsibility for the better world and the progress achieved throughout the world in the previous 15 years.
UN Global Compact is the largest international initiative aimed at engagement of businesses into activities to achieve sustainable development and to shape partnership between the public and corporate sectors. The Compact set demonstration and support of social legitimacy of business as its top-priority mission. The idea of the Global Compact was put forward by former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan at the World Economic Forum in Davos in 1999. The initiative commenced in 2000 in the UN Headquarters in New York in the United States.
