Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev speaks on global development at the forum “Asia-Europe”

Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev spoke at the plenary session of the Asia-Europe Meeting Summit in the Laos capital. He commented upon pressing issues of international scale, including regional and local conflicts, dissemination of weapons of mass destruction, international terrorism and transborder crime, as well as of food, energy and nuclear safety, pirate combat, crisis management and new economic development model.

Talking about energy security, Dmitry Medvedev said that it must be based on joint efforts, such as supplies of traditional types of energy sources, more efficient use of these sources securing proper environment protection measures, and developing new types of energy. In this context, the Russian Prime Minister called to make use of a whole range of initiatives, including Russia’s “global initiative.” According to the Prime Minister, it is necessary to create a new structure of energy cooperation that will meet the interests of all its participants.

The Prime Minister commented upon nuclear industry development and paid special attention to the nuclear security. “The dialogue on nuclear disarmament is necessary and consideration of all international security factors, influencing strategic stability is a prerequisite. There is a particular responsibility on Russia, as the United States and Russia have been and are taking steps to reduce and restrict nuclear armament. But these steps are leading us to the point when the involvement of all the states with nuclear potential, and not only Russia and the United States, is required. However, it is necessary to take into account that some countries in possession of missile and nuclear programs still refuse to join the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons”.

Suggesting ways to solve this and other questions, Dmitry Medvedev stressed the necessity of building up a harmonious inter-civilization dialogue and organizing respective forums.

Issues of nuclear power engineering will be examined at the panel discussion “Atom for Peace as Integration Catalyst” held by the ACIG and the Russian Presidential Academy on January 17, 2013 within the framework of the International scientific conference “Russia and the World: Challenges of Integration”.

The participants of the event will discuss global integration processes in the light of cooperation in nuclear power engineering. Within the framework of the discussion, the following topics will be touched upon: effective implementation of international nuclear projects, nuclear security, nuclear power engineering innovations, industry financing, etc.

Heads of the leading companies, representatives of international non-commercial and public organizations, leading scientists and nuclear industry experts are invited to participate in the panel discussion.
